Alan Alda and his 65-year-old wife are united by love and laughter — she won his heart by laughing at his jokes.
Alan Alda met his wife when she laughed at his jokes from the other side of the table.

They were the only ones at a party who ate cake off the floor.
They’ve been living and laughing together for 65 years and will continue to do so into old age.
She didn’t abandon him when he was diagnosed with PPARKlNSON’s DlSEASE.

Alan Alda, who played Captain Pierce Hawkeye in “M*A*S*H,” met his wife over cake. Although it may appear strange, the actor insisted that it was the ideal way for them to meet. They had no doubts about their compatibility after that incident.
They met at a mutual friend’s party in 1956. Alan was attending Fordham at the time, while Arlene Weiss was attending Hunter College. The actor, who was always the joker, was spouting wisecracks from the other end of the table.
While he was making quips, Arlene was at the other end of the table, laughing at everything he said. Alan recalled, “I was captivated… I heard her at the end of the table laughing at my jokes.” At that same party, there was a rum cake on top of a refrigerator that dropped on the floor, and Alan recounted:
“Arlene and I were the only two people who went in with spoons and ate it off the floor. That’s how you know. When two people eat a cake off the floor, that’s it for life.”
After their dinner date, Alan took Arlene home to the Bronx, “unheard of” for a guy from Manhattan. Eleven months later, the two tied the knot with a small, modest wedding. At the time, they didn’t expect the fame ahead of them. They merely wanted to live a comfortable life.
A dropped cake still appears to be a solid foundation for a relationship 65 years later. They still enjoy laughing together in their old age. They’ve come a long way from the small apartment they shared when they were younger, but they still fully support each other.
